Greece is a perennial favourite holiday destination amongst European travellers and no wonder; near enough to be just a few hours' flying time away, it pretty well guarantees good weather throughout the holiday season and better still, it's enormously varied in its landscape, culture and people, with plenty of choice between island and mainland destinations. With an ambience that is not quite full-on European nor yet Middle Eastern, it takes the best of both these worlds and makes them uniquely its own, flavouring its fascinating culture with uniquely Greek cuisine, robust Greek wines, and bouzouki music that immediately conjure up shady tavernas and crystalline blue seas.
On the north-eastern Mediterranean coast to the east of Greece, Turkey has been shaped by Greek, Persian, Roman and Byzantine empires, witness its mosques, temples, amphitheatres and traditional villages. Ephesus, a beautifully preserved Roman city, and Crusader-built Bodrum are perfect examples of Turkey's fascinating history, though its lovely coastline of sun-soaked sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, azure seas and lively resorts place Turkey firmly in the 21st century For example, Antalya is home to the Mediterranean's largest floating nightclub, whilst Gumbet and Marmara offer world-class bars, restaurants and clubs.
