For natural landscapes, virtually the whole coastline is dramatic and inspiring, and there are spectacular mountain ranges, dramatic gorges and a vast fertile interior plain. The east boasts Europe's only palm-tree forest beach, and the south coast has some of the Mediterranean's most stunning beaches and isolated coves. Cretan music and culture are easy to find (Cretans will find any excuse for a celebration) and there are many mountain villages where shepherds in traditional costume still tend their flocks. An abundance of fresh produce makes Cretan cuisine particularly distinctive – in fact Cretan food is renowned for its life-prolonging qualities!
Crete features some excellent luxury resorts for families, but if you're travelling as a couple you should take a closer look at the magical Blue Palace or the Domes Miramare both in Elounda.
