Welcome to the Canary Islands

Lying several hundred miles off the north-west coast of Africa closest to the countries of Western Sahara and Morocco, the Canary Islands comprise a chain of dramatic islands rising out of the Atlantic Ocean. There are seven islands in all, the principal holiday destinations being La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, and all the islands belong to Spain.

Whilst their culture and language are clearly Spanish influenced, each island has its own highly individual character, style and ambience based on centuries of seafaring and strong relationships with the ocean. With geological origins as volcanic islands, the landscape of the islands is highly dramatic; sheer cliffs and black sand beaches fringe the islands, mountains rise to dizzying heights and at their summits can be found lunar like landscapes of ash and stone, as well as snow at certain times of year. At the same time, the all year round excellent weather allows for a subtropical climate that encourages lush green low lying areas, as well as wildly exotic flowers and fruit that grow freely in the warm sunshine..

Canary Islands Holiday Highlights

The popularity of tourism on most of the islands has created a very visitor friendly infrastructure, with English being widely spoken; in addition, the islands offer a wide range of activities and amenities for holidaymakers, especially golf, hiking, cycling and other outdoor pursuits.

Climate

Well served with flights from the UK, the Canaries are a year-round destination, with average temperatures from 18°C in the winter to about 24°C in summer. Early booking is recommended during school holidays, but outside these dates the islands can be a tranquil getaway whether for golf, hiking, spa breaks or exploring the unique Canarian culture offering of the very different islands.

Getting Around

You can take buses, which charge for distance, rather than having set fares, but taxis are so easy to find and so reasonable that this is the most obvious and best mode of transport. There is no set fee for travelling by taxi, and each journey is charged on the basis of the distance you need to travel. Car hire is also an option, since private transport will give you absolute freedom to travel anywhere you like. Power steering is a good option to bear in mind- the roads can be very winding! Airport transfer times,Tenerife south, Costa Adeje resorts, approximately 20 minutes; to Guia de Isora approximately 40 minutes.
