Location Profile: Carvoeiro, The Algarve
By Vikki Ashton
Culture
Carvoeiro offers far more than just exploring the town on foot. Those wanting to really explore the coastline can take guided boat trips along the coast with local fishermen, exploring the rugged coastline and famous “algares”, caves the sea has carved out of the cliffs. The lucky ones amongst you will see pods of bottlenose dolphins trailing the boats and cruising the coast.
On land you can visit the remains of the walls of the Fort of Senhora da Conceição, where inside you will find the hermatige of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação (Our Lady of the Incarnation) dating back to the 17th century. Day trips to Silves can be arranged, where you can explore the Moorish castle and gain a birds eye view of the town and surrounding countryside.
Climate
Carvoeiro benefits from the Algarves warm Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and mild winters. July and August make for perfect beach weather, with temperatures being the hottest of the year. If you are looking for a more active holiday, making the most of the scenic walks along the cliffs or having a round of golf on one of the many golf courses, then June and September may provide a more comfortable temperature.
Landscapes
The scenery around Carvoeiro is simply stunning. The sandstone cliffs rising from the azure waters of the Atlantic make a sight to behold. Best explored by walking along the clifftops or taking a boat ride with a local fisherman, they are a feat of natural beauty not to be missed.
Along the rugged coastline around Carvoeiro there are many beautiful beaches to be found. The main beach Praia do Carvoeiro is an excellent starting point, a wide sheltered bay with great facilities nearby. However, for those looking to escape the crowds Praia do Paraiso and Praia do Carvalho are stunning little beaches tucked away from the main town.
