Our Visit to the 5* Martinhal Resort, Sagres - the Perfect Family Beachfront Getaway.

Arriving late on a Sunday night at 5-Star Martinhal Resort, we were immediately welcomed by the soothing sound of waves crashing against the beach as we entered reception. The air was warm for November, and there was a peaceful, almost magical atmosphere that instantly made us feel at home. After a smooth check-in, we were whisked away to our accommodation by golf buggy, with our luggage carefully delivered to the rooms.

As we stepped inside, we couldn’t help but notice how spacious and welcoming the rooms felt. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the two chairs positioned by the large windows invited us to sit back and soak in the stunning ocean views. It was the perfect start to what was sure to be a memorable stay.

Waking Up to Paradise

The next morning, I woke up to what could only be described as a postcard-worthy scene. I opened the curtains to reveal the stunning coastline, and in that moment, I just knew we were in for a fantastic day. Sarah and I took a leisurely walk around the resort to get our bearings before heading to the main building to meet Vikki for a relaxed breakfast on the terrace.

Martinhal Resort is nestled within the natural beauty of a National Park, offering a peaceful retreat surrounded by lush greenery and breathtaking views. The accommodation options, from Ocean Villas to Bay Houses and Private Luxury Villas, are thoughtfully designed with impeccable attention to detail and offer a sense of understated luxury that makes you feel completely at ease.

Our host, Ana, was absolutely lovely. She gave us a tour of the resort, driving us around in a golf buggy to help us get familiar with the layout, while also showing us the different room types and the many facilities on offer. It quickly became clear that Martinhal Resort is a paradise for families with young children.

The resort’s accommodations are spacious and stylish, blending modern comfort with a laid-back elegance. On arrival, guests are treated to a thoughtful welcome pack, and if there’s anything you need during your stay—whether it’s extra towels, baby essentials, or a few local treats—the resort is happy to arrange deliveries right to your door with a little advance notice. The Finisterra Spa offers the perfect sanctuary for relaxation with organic treatments and a tranquil Zen garden for ultimate
relaxation.

The Heart of the Resort: Main Square & Activities 

The Main Square was buzzing with excitement, filled with happy kids and families enjoying the many activities on offer. The resort caters to every age group, with plenty of options to keep little ones entertained. From trampolines and a VW Campervan playhouse to slides, a pirate boat, inflatables, and even arcade consoles, there’s something for every child. For those looking for structured activities, the resort’s Kids Clubs cater to different age groups, while younger children can enjoy the Creche.

Families can also hire bikes, including electric bikes, tandem bikes, and kid-friendly cargo bikes, to explore the beautiful surroundings. After all that fun, a visit to the Ice Cream Parlour is a must, or pop into the Supermercado for essentials, deli treats, fresh produce, and a selection of pastries.

The Magical Fairy Door Trail

One of my favourite discoveries was the Fairy Door Trail. This magical adventure allows kids to explore the resort while hunting for 18 miniature fairy doors scattered around the grounds, usually hidden on trees. With a map and clues, they’re led on a fun, interactive journey. Once they find all the doors, they get a prize – it’s a wonderful way to keep kids entertained while encouraging them to explore the stunning surroundings.

Relaxation & Play by the Beach

The resort is perfectly set up for families to relax and enjoy the beach. The Beach Hangout area is just below the Pool Hangout, with direct access to Martinhal Beach. Family coconut beds are provided for your day on the beach, and cool refreshments, light drinks, and snacks can be delivered from the Pool Hangout bar. There’s even a children’s playground with a zip wire and a Pump Track, ensuring the kids have endless fun while parents can kick back and relax, knowing they’re in a safe and engaging environment.

Pools & Dining by the Sea

The main pool area is just steps away from the beach and features a large heated swimming pool as well as a separate heated children’s pool. The watersports centre is conveniently located on the beach, so you can try everything from paddleboarding to kayaking, right at your doorstep. For lunch, we dined at the As Dunas poolside restaurant, which specializes in seafood and fresh fish. However, we couldn’t resist trying the famous Chicken Piri-Piri, and it certainly lived up to the hype!

Martinhal Resort offers the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure, making it an ideal family getaway. Whether you’re soaking up the stunning views, enjoying a peaceful walk through the resort’s beautiful grounds, or keeping the kids entertained with all the activities on offer, it’s a place where memories are made. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a family-friendly retreat that combines luxury, nature, and plenty of fun.
